Mental Health Association of Northwestern PA

Interning at the Mental Health Association has been a very positive experience

Interning at the Mental Health Association has been one of the most positive experiences I have ever had. I learned so much in a short amount of time. Getting to know the consumers and understanding their needs and their problems was truly an eye opening experience. Interning at MHA has completely changed the way I view the world. I have been exposed to so many different people and situations that I have never experienced before. I can honestly say interning here has made me a better person.

My advice to future interns is to get involved. Pick an activity you enjoy and share it with the consumers. We picked exercise and did 15 minutes of Zumba with the consumers twice a week. It was a good way to spend time with the consumers, and I think they enjoyed the activity too.

Getting to go to the support groups was one of my favorite things I got to do during my time at MHA. It gave me a first hand insight on what struggles people with mental illnesses really face. I learned about addictions and how difficult it is to get sober. I have learned about the numerous programs Erie has to offer people in tough situations, such as how to find housing.

This internship was an amazing experience. I met some fantastic people, developed relationships with those people, and grew as a person both professionally and personally.
