Mental Health Association of Northwestern PA
The Mental health Association of Northwestern Pennsylvania is doing some really significant things for the Erie community.
Most readers know about our Warming Nights, when temperatures drop below 20 degrees and the MHA opens its doors from 11 p.m. to 7 a.m. for those with no place else to go.
But there are other noteworthy ventures and proposals taking shape.
The Second Chance computer program is one of these wonderful new initiatives. This project recycles donated computers and gives individuals graduating from the program not only a refurbished computer, but the skills to connect electronically with the world.
Peer support, instruction and guidance are the edicts for this consumer-run agency, and that is apparent in every new team formed. Not too many years ago, it was just a dream to have individuals recovering from the throes of mental illness helping others in their journey toward recovery but it's happening now, and it truly is a wonderful movement.
In recent weeks, the volunteers and staff at the MHA have lost three dear friends. Although these losses have been very upsetting, it has been inspirational to be reminded of the depth of compassion that flows through the MHA. I am very proud to be associated with such a fine group of people.
